Hi! My name is Kayla Demint and I’m pretty much the eater, writer and amateur food photo taker here at Mince Republic. Some of my great loves in life are a perfectly ripe avocado, good coffee, my French Bulldog Albus and the sport of hockey. I write about the Anaheim Ducks.
My first experience with cooking was simply a result of circumstance. I was doing an independent study program instead of going to a traditional High School and therefore spent much of my time at home while my parents were at work and my brother was at school. Inevitably, every day lunch time would roll around and I would find myself standing in front of the fridge scouring for something microwavable. After the sixth box of chicken nuggets, I was growing pretty tired of my new diet, so I asked my mom if she could teach me how to cook something I could easily make every day. She brought me in the kitchen, showed me a few tricks and then taught me to make a lunch bowl with potatoes, shrimp and chicken. After that initial learning session, I pretty much made that meal every weekday for about three weeks straight. I had always loved food and trying new flavors, so with some of my free time, I began watching cooking shows and from there picked up some new techniques which I eventually began to translate into my every day lunch bowl until it was a new flavor combo every day.
Since that fateful day I picked up a skillet and tossed ingredients in the pan, I have come to love the feeling of being in a kitchen using creativity to create meals that bring people together with a mutual sigh of satisfaction. Food is one of my passions— it is fuel for our performance, it is a conversation piece, an artistic expression, and most importantly, a way to bring people together. There is nothing quite like a full table full of friends and family happily chatting enjoying good food, drinks and company.
Besides playing hockey and eating, I love writing and telling stories. I love the way words can paint a picture of experience and can create such an array of emotions, so it is the marrying of these two passions of mine that this blog has come to be. I hope that as you navigate the pages, join in my food and beverage experiences and try some of the recipes, we can get to know one another and break bread.
