Talking about my new favorite way to start seeds using the Orta Gardens self-watering seed starter.
As I’ve mentioned before, this was my first Summer season that I get to use my raised garden beds, something I was really excited about. I’ve been growing tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers and lots of herbs, plus plenty of flowers grown throughout as companion plants.
Previously I’ve done a combination of buying starter plants and also starting my own seeds. While starting seeds does take some more work, I decided this year that I would just start everything from seed so that I could try out different varieties that may not be carried at stores near me. It’s so much fun to be able to have so many options!
Sometimes the options at stores are limited and there were some specific varieties that I really wanted to try (like Cucamelons for example, which I couldn’t find at any stores local to me). Plus, I also like the added benefit of being able to know exactly how my seeds got started and the whole process is pretty fun too.
It’s so exciting when your seedlings start to sprout!
Don’t even get me started on how mind blowing it is that a little seed can turn into a monstrous Zucchini plant that will provide pounds and pounds of squash.
I’ve used quite a few different seed starting products in the past, from planting in egg cartons, to solo cups, to those plastic domed kits you can buy at a local hardware store.
But this year I finally found my favorite seed starting kit. I used an Orta Gardens Self Watering Seed pot and I absolutely love it. Not only is it absolutely beautiful but it also has a water reservoir so you only water about once a week. Good for people like me who sometimes forget!
I’ve used quite a few different seed starting products in the past, from planting in egg cartons, to those little plastic domed squares you can buy but this year has definitely been my favorite.
I’m using an Orta Gardens Self Watering Seed Pot and I absolutely love it. For starters, it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s actually good looking enough for me to leave in the garden window in my kitchen and it blends in well and is a fun conversation piece.
It also has a water reservoir so you only water about once a week. Great for me people like me who sometimes forget! The porous terra-cotta of the pot wicks water from the reservoir to give the seedlings the perfect amount of moisture all the time.
The pots are handmade in Oakland, California and I’m quite happy to support local artisans who craft products that are as functional as they are beautiful.
If you’re interested in picking up an Orta pot, they were kind enough to give my readers 15% off using the code MINCE through the month of August.
