This past Spring we didn’t participate in the One Room Challenge for the first time since moving into our house. Honestly with so much going on in our personal lives, we just didn’t have the time or the mental bandwidth to take on a project. But now we’re back and ready to participate in the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge!
If you aren’t familiar with the One Room Challenge (ORC), it’s an event hosted by Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. Every Spring and Fall, they host a six-week challenge to make over a space in your home.
One of the best parts of the ORC in my opinion is having a deadline. This keeps us from having a seemingly never ending project (you know how that can be!) and then we get to enjoy our beautiful new space. I also love checking out all the other participants designing beautiful rooms too. You can check out other guest participants here.
If you made it here from the ORC website — welcome!
This time we’re going to be making over our guest bathroom!
First, let’s talk about the space.
Right now the guest bathroom is pretty much just builder grade with some lavender paint on the walls. But it has great bones so we’re hoping to make it more cohesive with the rest of the house. It has a dual sink vanity and it’s actually a decent size for a guest bathroom. When we moved in, there was tile in here but when we had all of our main floors replaced, we had them demo this bathroom too so we’ve been living with the concrete (and no toilet!) in here for about a year now. Thankfully, we have three other bathrooms in the house but it’s time to get this one up and moving again.
The New Design
Now let’s talk about the fun part–the new design!
The Plan | To Do List
As for how we’re going to get this all done in 8 weeks, here’s our to do list with a basic plan for how we’re going to get it done. As usual, I expect things to change and evolve as the project does but here’s what we’re striving for.
Week 1 |
Demo: remove the mirror, countertop, fixtures, vanity doors and towel bar
Start painting
Week 2 |
Prep floor for new tile flooring
Paint vanity and doors
Week 3 |
Tile the floor
Week 4 |
Put the doors back on the vanity, add new handles
Install the countertop and new fixtures
Week 5 |
Tile backsplash
Install new switch, new lights
Hang new mirrors
Touch up paint
WEEK 6 |
Finish tile work if needed
Add new baseboards
Paint or replace shower fixtures
WEEK 7 |
Finish anything still remaining
(Leaving this week open to finish anything that’s still outstanding)
WEEK 8 |
