It’s week one of the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge and we’re talking about our owners suite bedroom makeover.
One Room Challenge (ORC) Fall 2020
It’s that time again! This week begins the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge and we’re excited to be apart of it again. We’ve participated in two previous one room challenges and renovated our pool bathroom and main bedroom walk in closet.
What is the ORC?
If you aren’t familiar with the One Room Challenge (ORC), it’s an event hosted by Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. Every Spring and Fall, they host a six-week challenge to make over a space in your home.
One of the things I love most about the ORC is the time crunch and the accountability. You get six weeks to share your space and that pushes us to get things done and then we end up with a room makeover much quicker than if we dilly dally (we’ve all been there before!). It’s nice to have a finished space and it’s nice to see all of the other participants designing beautiful rooms too! You can check out other participants here.
If you made it here from the ORC website — welcome!
This challenge, we’re going to be making over our owners suite!
Our current room is a good size with lots of potential. The biggest problem right now is that it just doesn’t fit the vibe and aesthetic of our home. So during this challenge, we’re going to change that!
Owners Suite Bedroom Before Photos
But first, let’s look at some before photos of the room.
Owners Suite Bedroom Makeover Plans
Here’s the new plan.
headboard | bed frame | nightstands | lamps | ceiling fan | barn door | frame tv | fireplace | accent chair | olive tree | lumbar pillow | green pillows | bedding |
I find it somewhat difficult but if I had to, I would probably describe our style as “cozy Scandinavian modern”. I might have completely made that up but there you have it.
There are a few different moving parts in this design but hopefully it gives an idea of the space to come. The most notable change, as you may have noticed, is that we’re planning on adding a fireplace to the room.
Even though in Southern California, there’s not too much need for a fireplace, it brings a lot of ambiance to a room so we will be adding an electric fireplace.
We’ll also be building a barn door to separate the bedroom from the bathroom. Not often but occasionally, it would be convenient to have these two rooms separated (for example when one person needs the light on in the bathroom and someone is sleeping).
We’ve gone back and forth on whether or not we’ll do an accent wall in the room so I guess you’ll find out about that when we do!
We won’t be replacing furniture since we’ve actually bought most since we moved in. We were originally sleeping on the floor but then we picked up our headboard and bed frame. We will be adding an accent chair near the fireplace.
With that said, we’re excited to get started! Here’s the to do list which I am sure will grow and change as we go through this renovation.
To Do List
get new flooring– we actually just got this done! we’re loving our new floors- paint room + door + trim + shutters
- order electric fireplace
- build fireplace frame
- paint/finish fireplace frame
get an accent chair– we already picked it up!- mount TV – we’re doing another Frame TV
- art / plants / decor – I don’t always place enough importance on this aspect of decorating so I’m hoping to change that this time! It really helps bring a room together.
- build dog platform bed – I’m not sure if we’ll get this done in time but that’s the hope. We’d like to build a platform dog bed using a crib mattress.
