Master Closet Renovation: ORC Week 2 – Demo

Welcome back to Week 2 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge!

The One Room Challenge (ORC) is an eight week challenge to totally transform a space in your home. For this challenge, we’re going to be renovating our master closet!

This week we’re talking about demo! 

Before we put it all together, we’ve got to take it all apart! We started by removing everything from the closet and then got started on demo’ing the room. This meant taking down the existing closet pieces and then removing the carpet. 

Of course, like any good DIY, we did run into a little snag when taking out the existing closet pieces. It turns out that one of the pieces had accidentally been nailed into a water line to our bath tub so when we pulled it off the wall, the nail came out of the water line and sprayed water all over the closet! Thankfully, it was an easy fix. 

The process for demo went something like this:

• take everything out of the closet and try to find somewhere for all this stuff to go for the next few weeks
• remove existing closet components
• repair hole in water line
• rip up carpet
• cut carpet with a utility knife and then roll and tape with duct tape
• remove carpet pad
• remove tack strip
• use demo hammer to crack and remove tile
• remove baseboards
• clean up tile

While we’re re-doing the closet tile, we’re also going to re-do the master bathroom tile since the two spaces are connected and it’ll just be easier if we get it all done in one shot. 

With that said, there was a minute there where the old saying “it’s gotta get worse before it gets better came into play”. I’ll let this image speak for itself! 

Now that we’ve got the demo done and things cleaned up, it’s time to move onto the fun stuff!
