It’s week two of the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge and we’re making over our owners suite! Let’s talk paint, an accent wall and a fireplace.
In this weeks post, I’m talking about what we accomplished in the first week of the One Room Challenge, whether or not we should add an accent wall and if so what kind and about starting to plan our DIY electric fireplace build.
In case you missed week one, you can catch last week’s post here:

One Room Challenge (ORC) Fall 2020
Just in case you aren’t familiar with the One Room Challenge (ORC), it’s an event hosted by Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. Every Spring and Fall, they host a six-week challenge to make over a space in your home.
If you made it here from the ORC website — welcome!
So far I’m actually feeling pretty good about where we’re at outside of one conundrum we have yet to solve. Of course, check back in a few weeks and find out if I’m still feeling that way!
the great Bedroom Accent Wall debate
The conundrum we’re currently tackling is whether or not we’re going to have an accent wall behind the bed. I think the answer is yes we are but then the question is what kind?
Originally, I wanted to do one of those modern board and batten type walls but I worry that I will tire of it too quickly.
I don’t think I’m sold on a completely white room either. I love the black we have on the shiplap in our media niche and would love to incorporate it in this room somehow. But I also don’t want to just paint a wall a different color because while I think that can be fun, it doesn’t say to me “luxurious owners suite oasis”.
ACCENT WALL OPTIONS
There are so many different ideas for accent walls these days, some we’ve thought about include:
- board and batten (modern or even regular)
- shiplap (thick and wide planks)
- vertical plank wall
- wallpaper
Right now I am leaning towards doing a black wall in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore (same as the media niche wall) but then adding some sort of texture to it somehow–probably in the form of wood but I’m not sure exactly.
So I think this part of the renovation is on hold. To be honest, I’m not sure I will have even made up my mind in the next six weeks but we’ll see!
Other than that, we’re trucking along. The big goal this past week was to get the room painted and to plan the electric fireplace wall. That meant we also needed to make sure that we ordered the fireplace.
Fortunately, we got the room painted (outside of the one wall we’re still hemming and hawing about — although we did get this primed as you can see above). While we had our paint supplies out, we also (bonus!) painted the little hallway area right outside the room which is a nice little entry way.
Planning an Electric Fireplace
There are a few different options we liked for the electric fireplace. One of the big decisions we went through was whether we wanted a more “standard” looking fireplace or a linear fireplace (more horizontal).
In the end, we ended up with something more in between. It is technically more horizontal or linear but it also doesn’t look overly modern.
I like a modern design but not too modern, if that makes sense. I didn’t feel like it made sense to have a really long linear fireplace due to the space available. We also have a more “traditional” fireplace in the living room so I didn’t want to deviate too far from that.
If you’re in the market for an electric fireplace, here’s a couple questions I felt helpful to guide us in our search.
- Do we prefer a more traditional or a linear fireplace?
- What is the space available?
- Do you want logs or crystals in the fireplace?
In the end, we decided on going with a more linear fireplace — it’s 31″ x 21.5″ with the option to do logs or crystals.
To get started, we mapped out the basic look of the fireplace area (including the dimensions of the fireplace). This was helpful in determining the scale. This weekend we will begin to build the frame while we wait for the fireplace to be delivered!
