Welcome back to Week 4 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge!
THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE
The One Room Challenge (ORC) is an eight week challenge to totally transform a space in your home. For this challenge, we’re going to be renovating our master closet!
If you missed the other posts, you can read them here:
Week 1 – The Plans
Week 2 – Demo
Week 3 – Starting Tile
Week 4 – You Are Here
I can’t believe we’re halfway through this challenge! As always, time seems to be moving quickly and we’re starting to feel that deadline approaching. Things have certainly been a bit more difficult with the current state of things but we’re doing our best to mitigate any problems that come up!
This week we’re going to be talking more about tile! As I mentioned in last weeks post, tile is probably one of the biggest parts of the project sine we’re not only doing the closet but also the master bathroom. It just didn’t make sense not to tackle it all at once since the spaces flow into each other.
But first, just as a reminder, here’s where we started with the closet:
Last week we talked about prepping and getting ready to lay the tile down and now it’s the fun part, actually getting to start laying it! This has really helped make the project feel like it’s coming along and has made a big impact on the space. We’re in love with the tile we chose!
Installing Tile
Here’s a brief rundown on the process for installing the tile:
- Clean floor of all debris
- Locate the center of the room and start laying tile with spacers for a dry fit. (don’t skip this step, it will help you troubleshoot before you get in too deep!)
- Mix the thin-set mortar
- Apply mortar in small sections then place tile and let dry for 24-48 hours
- Make any necessary tile cuts with a manual tile cutter or wet tile saw
- Apply grout and remove any excess
*no foot traffic on the tile for 3 hours
Tools Used to Install Tile
Manual Tile Cutter | Wet Tile Saw | 1/8″ spacers | QEP Tile leveling system pliers, clips and wedges | Laser Level | Sponge | Trowel | Bucket | Drill with mixing paddle
