Welcome back to Week 4 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge!
The One Room Challenge (ORC) is an eight week challenge to totally transform a space in your home. For this challenge, we’re going to be renovating our master closet!

Week 1 – The Plans
Week 2 – Demo
Week 3 – Starting Tile
Week 4 – Tiling
Week 5 – Pause
Week 6 – You Are Here
If you’ve been following along, you may have noticed that I didn’t post last week and that was due to Week 5 being cancelled.
From ORC:
“We stand in solidarity over the racial injustice and murders of George Floyd and the many other victims of police brutality and racism. To both honor and respect these victims there will not be a Week 5 of the ORC and posting will return next week. The ORC team will use this time to better educate ourselves to be the best possible allies.
This platform is being used to share sources and links to articles and organizations educating and combatting racism. Acknowledging #blacklivesmatter is essential.”
You can see more at their post here.
I took the week to listen, learn and have conversations. I will continue to.
It’s now week 6 of the ORC and I can’t believe how quickly time is passing. Even with the increased time for this One Room Challenge, it still feels so quick!
But we have gotten a lot done.
The main thing is the tiling. The tiling of the closet is done and I’m really happy with how it turned out. You can see a sneak peak of that below!
And this week I also wanted to share how we designed our new closet system. I’m a big fan of Ikea products (especially organization related) and for the price you really can’t beat their closet systems.
One thing we desperately needed in this space was more thorough organization. The space is a good size but it really wasn’t maximized with just a few hanging rods.
So enter the Ikea PAX system which is very customizable and can be outfitted to whatever you need. For us, that a meant a good deal of space for hanging clothes but also a lot of drawers and also some space for shoes as well.
Here’s a look at our design:
How to Plan a Closet
- Measure your space
- Determine what sort of storage you’re going to need. Do you want to hang most of your clothes? Do you hang pants? Do you need drawers or do you have a dresser somewhere else in your room?
- Find a system that works for you. There are so many out there!
- If you’re going with Ikea, get familiar with the PAX Planner. Thankfully, Ikea makes it really simple to design a closet with their planner and you can try all different variations to get exactly what you want.
- Put in your order and pick it up!
With just two weeks left, it’s time to start wrapping things up and moving the closet pieces into the closet! Stay tuned for next week.
